The Application Process:
Application Package Review
During this step, the application package is reviewed for assurance of an applicant completing the application package in it's entirety and meeting the position's minimum requirements.
Written Testing of General Knowledge
During this step, applicants are scheduled for completion of the department's firefighter applicant written test. This written test evaluates the candidates level of general knowledge that is expected of a certified NFPA 1001 Firefighter I applicant.
Physical Agility Testing
During this step, applicants are scheduled for completion of the Department's physical agility test. This test evaluates the applicant's abilities to physically perform functions commonly required of a firefighter when performing operational firefighting and rescue duties.
Peer Panel Interview
During this step, applicants are scheduled for an oral interview that is conducted by a panel of department personnel who are varying ranks and positions. The peer panel interview evaluates each candidate, in effort to gain a more complete idea of the candidate's mature and professional fit for a firefighter position with the Irmo Fire District.
Due to the position of an Irmo Firefighter being one of public trust, a background investigation is conducted during this step of the application process. During the background investigation, the applicants employment, driving and criminal histories are reviewed, personal and professional references are contacted and any other items that the department deems necessary to be investigated to ensure the applicant possess themoral, ethical and integral character traits expected of an Irmo Firefighter.
Fire Chief's Interview
During this step, applicants meet with the department's Fire Chief and Assistant Chief for an informal interview regarding potential employment with the Irmo Fire District.
