Full-Time Entry & Lateral Firefighters
The Irmo Fire District is now taking applications for a future testing process. Applications can be submitted online, mail in or in person. Once enough applications are received candidates will be notified of the testing dates. The IFD makes every attempt to have candidate testing only lasting one day.
- Each test day will consist of the following
- Written Test 8am-10am
- Agility Test 11am
- Oral Interviews at 12pm or after completing the agility test.

Minimum Requirements:
- Must be 18 years of age or older.
- Possess a valid drivers license.
- Possess a high school diploma or GED certificate.
- Must pass a criminal background and drivers license check.
- Must be able to complete medical, physical and written assessments
- S.C. Fire Academy 1153 Firefighter I certification or NFPA Firefighter I Certification that is eligible for equivalency or reciprocity by the S.C. Fire Academy.
- Current first aid, CPR and AED certification or higher level certification.
The Application Process:
1st Step
Application Package Review
During this step, the application package is reviewed for assurance of an applicant completing the application package in it's entirety and meeting the position's minimum requirements.
2nd Step
Written Testing of General Knowledge
During this step, applicants are scheduled for completion of the department's firefighter applicant written test. This written test evaluates the candidates level of general knowledge that is expected of a certified NFPA 1001 Firefighter I applicant.
3rd Step
Physical Agility Testing
During this step, applicants are scheduled for completion of the Department's physical agility test. This test evaluates the applicant's abilities to physically perform functions commonly required of a firefighter when performing operational firefighting and rescue duties.
4th Step
Peer Panel Interview
During this step, applicants are scheduled for an oral interview that is conducted by a panel of department personnel who are varying ranks and positions. The peer panel interview evaluates each candidate, in effort to gain a more complete idea of the candidate's mature and professional fit for a firefighter position with the Irmo Fire District.
5th Step
Background Investigation
Due to the position of an Irmo Firefighter being one of public trust, a background investigation is conducted during this step of the application process. During the background investigation, the applicants employment, driving and criminal histories are reviewed, personal and professional references are contacted and any other items that the department deems necessary to be investigated to ensure the applicant possess themoral, ethical and integral character traits expected of an Irmo Firefighter.
6th Step
Fire Chief's Interview
During this step, applicants meet with the department's Fire Chief and Assistant Chief for an informal interview regarding potential employment with the Irmo Fire District.
